The present collection of essays is the product of a conference held at the School of Celtic Studies, at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 31 March and 1 April 2017. Drawing on the research of scholars from Ireland, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe, and the United States, it is the first edited collection devoted to the topic of dindshenchas (‘history of eminent places’, ‘topographical legends’), and one of the first book-length treatments on the subject since the monumental editions and translations of the place-name corpus called Dindshenchas Érenn published by Whitley Stokes and Edward J. Gwynn between 1892 and 1935. The fourteen chapters in this volume showcase the multifaceted nature of the Dindshenchas corpus, as well as that of Irish topographical texts more broadly, and cover a diverse range of topics including manuscript studies, lexicography, genealogy, folklore, onomastics and literary analysis.
