Irish Among the Languages: Late Victorian Developments in Education

This work focuses on the Irish language revival in the wider context of how other languages were studied in Victorian Ireland. This was the period when modern European languages became embedded in the country’s formal education settings, a fact which proved to be fruitful for the Irish language Revival. It is hard to imagine the Revival being accomplished at all if it had not been for the Victorian language-learning culture of its leaders.
